Hi,

I've been searching for several stamps from Rwanda released in 2003 about children and AIDS. According to a circular on the UPU website, these are the last valid stamps they released until at least 2007. They're also a nightmare to find -- no one carries them or can find them.

Alas, I have no idea what the Scott numbers are for these stamps. I'm off to the library tomorrow to do some research. If I am able to find it I'll post an addendum with what I learn.

Please let me know if you are able to find them.

bonjour stephen,

unfortunately, the 2007 scott stops listing stamps for rwanda in 1999. this was probably due to the unstable situation in the government and the civil war that was ongoing for several years. it would seem the UPU also had the same opinion of spurious issues being put on the market and this is the reason you are having a hard time finding your stamps. perhaps they are listed in the michel catalogs, i may have that one, but i am not sure how current my catalog is. good luck in your search.

Thanks, Cajunsr. The Rwandan stamps are truly a nightmare to acquire. I collect AIDS stamps and have virtually a complete set of them (including the 2nd to 10th most difficult to obtain ones), but the Rwandan just don't come on the market.

Do let me know if you ever find their numbers in the Michel catalog. Don't know that it'll help me with my search, but it certainly can't hurt.

BTW, if you're ever curious to look at my collection, take a look at www.aidsonstamps.comLink (http). It's a site I run about the topic.

bonjour stephen,
unfortunately, my michel catalog is a 77/78 and not much help. i have added your site to my favorites. i will use it as a topic for my stamp club newsletter. i was in the medical field for about 20 years as a medic in the army, then as a civilian in nuclear medicine technology before a career in the postal service. so i know the devastation of aids and other STD diseases. and the prevention is so simple - education and safe sex. yet no one will heed the word. :znaika: that is the saddest thing about the disease. :|

Hello Stephen ,

I also have a little topical collection of AIDS stamps , I had a look on your website (quickly added to my favourites ...) and I'm far away beeing as complete as you are .... but I concentrate on stamp showing the red ribbon ; not only stamps but also FDC , postmarks and stationnery.

About th french 1994 stamp , are you aware that it has been issued "2 times" ... once on April 30th (set of 2 "Europa" stamps) and a second time on December 1st as a stamp + label ?

I'm not sure I could give you any help (I've checked my own collection , all the stamps I have are displayed on your website) but feel free to ask if you need anything from France (or Switzerland as I live few km from the boarder)

Kind regards.

Hi Margritte,

Thanks for the answers. I had not been aware that French stamp was released twice. I will post something on my website about it tonight. Do you know if the Scott numbers are different? (They probably are). And if so, what the Scott number (or even Michel or Yvert) for the two labels are? One of them is Scott 2419, but I don't know which of the issues that is. Or what the Scott number for the tag might be. I'll see about doing a little research this evening and finding out more though, but a Scott guide would certainly make it faster.

And thanks for the FDC. That's funny -- the writing in the lower-left corner says they are from the collection of Paul Hennefeld. He's one of the biggies when it comes to collecting Gay/Lesbian history on stamps. I have a link to his site on the links page of my site. He doesn't have an Internet presence other than a several year-old version of his collection featured on the web, but that's still cool that it got enough notice to get a special cancellation mark.

Still no leads on finding those Rwandan stamps, but I knew they'd be a nightmare to get my hands on. The search ever goes on...

Okay, found a little something.

Scott 2419 refers to the July release. 2419a refers to the December release. Whether 2419a is the stamp, the tab, or the stamp -and- the tab is unclear to me. I'm sure a looksie in the Scott guide would say. (But I'll bet it's just the tab).

bonjour Sdlorimor,

i believe your assumption of 2419a is correct. my 2007 scott catalog shows the same information is verified with my 2000 ceres catalog which shows images of both issues. the december issue must have coincided with an aids event so the necessity for the label.

Hello ,

from my Yvert catalogue , the April stamp is n°2878 while the December one is n°2916.
Without the label , I believe there is no difference.

Have a nice week-end !!

Now if I can only find those Rwandan stamps. I think maybe I'll post a message on the French philately forum here in Delcampe. The French forums are even busier than the English ones. (I can't read/write French, but Google Translator comes in handy!)

bonsoir cousin magritte,

the ceres catalog numbers are 2862/3, 2898 respectively. as for color differences, i only have the 2898 and cannot compare the two. however, when the U.N. put out an issue (not aids related) one year, i noted in their philatelic bulletin they had later printings of that same stamp, and i did find some color variations, very slight but there just the same. it is worth checking to see if they exist in this stamp.

Hello Again ,

I've checked the France Aids stamps I have to see if there is any color difference ... I would say no ...

The only difference I could see is that the December stamp has little more "purple dots" at the top ... but it's really not obvious , and I have only 1 April stamp to check.

I add scans , not sure you'll see much on them !!!

p.s.- it is my training as a army medic, then a civilian nuclear medicine technologist years ago and doing CAT scans that i can read subtle differences in B/W, grays, and colors. you learn these techniques reading the x-rays and scans. but the applications for stamps is very helpful too. :wink2:

In addition op cajunsr, I can affirmate that even in Official Belgian Catalog 2009 (edited in Sep 2008) there are no more cataloged stamps of Rwand after 1999.
But Burundi has well printed stamps in 2000, 2002 and 2004, and this country has known the same racial problems.als Rwanda. But in Rwanda, it hasn't stop, cause now ex Zaïre, now again "République Démocratique::question: du Congo" is even concerned
